TEHRAN (IQNA) – Sheikh Abdul-Mahdi al-Karbalai, the representative of Iraq’s top Shia cleric Ayatollah Seyed Ali al-Sistani in Karbala, has contracted COVID-19, some news websites said.

The websites, including al-Mawqif al-Iraqi, cited a medical source in Karbala Governorate as saying that the cleric has tested positive for the virus.

Sheikh Karbalai is the Friday prayer leader of Karbala and custodian of the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS).

He reads the official statements and sermons of Ayatollah Sistani.

Iraq’s coronavirus caseload has topped 205,000, with deaths at nearly 6,500.

The World Health Organization has warned that Iraq’s cases are “exponentially rising to an alarming and worrying level, suggesting a major health crisis soon.”
